What is Smartform Flashing?

Smartform is a multi-purpose roof flashing product that features a creped aluminium top sheet reinforced with a composite laminate layer and a butyl backing.

Uses of Smartform Flashing

Smartform isn’t just for roof flashing; it’s also great for general-purpose repairs and permanent or temporary sealing.

Its lighter grade full-backed butyl flashing is ideal for special applications, like roof penetration flashing, extreme profiles, and irregular shapes. You can use it for damp proof courses to protect walls from rising moisture.

Because of its exceptional flexibility, it fits around irregular and extreme roof profiles, wall connections, skylights, verandahs, and chimneys.

Installing Smartform Flashing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing Smartform flashing yourself is straightforward — you just need the right tools, a clean surface, and careful application technique to get it right. No special training or advanced equipment is needed, just some basic DIY skills, attention to detail, and a steady hand.

Here’s your complete step-by-step guide to installing Smartform flashing the right way:

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Some basic tools are needed to install Smartform flashing. Here’s a checklist of what you need:

  • Smartform flashing

  • Sturdy roof ladder

  • Utility knife or heavy-duty scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • Clean cloth or stiff brush

  • Safety gloves

  • Roller or hand presser (optional – creates a tighter bond)

Step 2: Prepare Surfaces

Properly preparing your surface before applying Smartform makes all the difference. Ensuring the roof surface is free of debris and dry will ensure the self-adhesive butyl backing bonds smoothly.

To get the surface ready, take a clean cloth or stiff brush to remove any debris or leftover all-purpose repair tape. Harsh cleaning chemicals can weaken the butyl aching, so it’s best to avoid using them. tIt’s super important to ensure the surface is completely moisture-free so that the flashing adheres properly.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the Flashing

Accurately measure roof penetrations, wall connections, or joints before applying Smartform. Don’t eye-ball it, because you’ll risk cutting too little or too much flashing. Cut the creped aluminium surface to size using heavy-duty scissors or a utility knife. We recommend leaving around 5-10 cm of extra length to overlap — this will create a watertight seal.

Step 4: Peel and Position the Flashing

Slowly peel back the self-adhesive butyl backing and carefully place the measured strip of Smartfrom flashing over the target area. Make sure you properly align it as it sticks to ensure a snug fit over different contours. Keep a steady hand while you stick it down to prevent any wrinkles or air bubbles.

Step 5: Mould the Flashing to Fit

Press the flashing firmly onto the roof surface. You can stretch and mould it over curves and corners to ensure it forms an extra-tight seal.

Once it’s stuck down, apply even, firm pressure to remove air pockets and activate the butyl adhesive. A roller or hand presser will come in handy here to ensure a secure, long-lasting bond, especially over extreme roof profiles and around roof penetrations.

Step 6: Seal and Overlap (If Needed)

If you’re using several sections, overlap each by at least 50 cm and press the overlaps firmly to create an instant waterproof seal. This is known as the butyl joining technique. It’s a handy trick of the trade that ensures a watertight joint that lasts.

If you’re covering extreme roof profiles, penetrations, or irregular shapes (like skylights and chimney abutments), the butyl joining technique is a must.

Step 7: Final Checks

To wrap things up, double-check that all the edges of the Smartform strip have been properly adhered to. Run your fingers along the flashing to feel for any air pockets or wrinkles. Also, keep your eyes peeled for any small gaps that you might have missed. If left unnoticed, they will likely need flashing repairs later on.
